| If there is one universal constant I am sure will never change is that we will always need more space. Just you wait and see: as soon as we discover space travel, even what we now call “infinite” space won't be so “infinite” anymore. Humanity is in a continued evolution and since computers have become more of an extension of ourselves than some perhaps realize, our storage needs get bigger and bigger as we make our computers evolve to fit our ever changing demands. And because companies are quick to comply to people's request, Hitachi has started shipping the first 2TB drive with 7200 rotations per minute. The new Deskstar 7K2000 features a lot of eco-friendly features such as low power needs, being RoHS compliant and halogen-free. "The demand for higher capacity disk drives is being fueled by the persistent growth of digital information generated by consumers and organizations alike," said John Rydning, research director for hard disk drives at IDC. "With the introduction of the industry's first 7200 RPM, 2TB HDD, Hitachi GST is building a tradition of time-to-market leadership for delivering the biggest and fastest disk drives for capacity-hungry PC users, given it was also the first HDD vendor to ship a 1TB HDD, the Deskstar 7K1000, in early 2007." Besides the Deskstar 7K2000, Hitachi will also be refreshing the 7200 RPG Deskstar 7K1000.C hard drive family that will come in capacities of 160GB to 1TB and will be delivering up to 500GB per platter. With 512-byte sector formatting, a ramp load/unload design for shock protection, as well as Thermal Fly-height Control (for containing temperatures during read/write), the devices are worthy additions to anyone's computer. Though you know I am pretty reserved when talking about Hitachi disks. "The new Deskstar 7K2000 reflects our ongoing commitment to provide customers, channel partners and OEMs with proven, reliable solutions for enabling desktop computers, gaming systems, workstations and desktop RAID arrays," said Brendan Collins, vice president of marketing, Hitachi GST. No pricing has been released as of now but I am pretty sure they won't be the cheapest of the bunch. | |
